About The Blackpool Illuminations

When other seaside resorts are hibernating during the harsh winter months, Blackpool is buzzing with excitement and life courtesy of the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations.

This annual festival features over one million artistic light installations and attracts an army of 3.5 million visitors to the small seaside town.

The Blackpool Illuminations typically lasts for 60 days and the display stretches over six miles of the promenade.

Each year, the event commences with a switch-on by a celebrity. From 2014, the switch-on event officially expanded to be held over a weekend, featuring all of our favourite musicians, celebrities and TV personalities.

Lightpool Festival

In addition to the awe and wonder of the Illuminations, You can also catch the Lightpool Festival as it takes place, typically in late October.

This two-day festival is a collaboration of talented performers, both locally and from across the country. Previous years have seen support from partners such as VisitBlackpool, BBC Philharmonic and LeftCoast.

During the festival, spectacular performances sprinkle across the coast, including Dancing in the Moonlight, a free-entry dance in the UK's most feted ballroom, featuring Luke Jerram's installation to celebrate the Museum of the Moon.

Other than these, the 'Hypodoche' performance by the artist Ann Carragher also formed a vital part of the occasion. It celebrated the personal relationship of the artist with the natural processes, life, and the female 'space and voice' of the architecture all through the ages.

The installations of light towards the commemoration of this event featured composed of water and light. This event took place at the art gallery of the town centre.

Heritage Tram Parade

During the illumination season, you can also enjoy spotting one of the illuminated theme trams, rebuilt from the historic Western trams. They run along the portions of the promenade that are illuminated during the celebrations.
