Walking the Length of Blackpool Seafront

Walking the Length of Blackpool Seafront Image

Walking the length of Blackpool Seafront offers a memorable day out. Experience lively attractions, beautiful coastal views, and unique seaside charm all in one walk.

The seafront promenade stretches from Starr Gate in the south all the way to Bispham in the north. The entire path is flat, easy to follow and has loads to see along the way for a fun day out.

Starting Point: Starr Gate

Begin your walk at Starr Gate tram terminus. This is the quiet end of the seafront with long sandy beaches and grassy dunes. From here you can look back towards St Annes and watch the trams arriving.

There is a slipway leading down to the beach and plenty of space to stretch your legs before you set off. You will notice the vast open sky and feel a calm sense at the start of your journey.

Passing Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Walking north for about a mile brings you to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. You will hear the laughter and cries of excitement as riders go on the Big One and other rollercoasters. The sight of the tall coaster tracks against the sky makes this section feel lively.

Across the road is Sandcastle Waterpark where you may see families enjoying slides and waves through the windows. There are food stalls and cafes nearby where you might pause for an ice cream cone or burger. You can also see the tram line passing close by with passengers waving as they ride.

Exploring the Central Pier Area

Continuing along the promenade you will arrive at Central Pier. This pier is full of bright lights and fun attractions. On the pier, you will find a big wheel, funfair rides for all ages and colourful arcades with games and prizes.

There are benches to rest on and plenty of places to buy snacks or ice cream. This area is known as the Golden Mile and offers musicians and street entertainers during warm months. Look out for candy floss vendors and summer outdoor shows near the pier.

North Pier and the Promenade Views

Further on you will reach North Pier which is the oldest of the three seaside piers. This one feels calmer than the central area. It features an old-fashioned theatre where regular performances take place.

Walk along the pier to enjoy wooden benches that look out over the water. Behind the pier are walkways lined with gardens and memorials such as the war cenotaph. Raised pathways offer excellent views of the sea and passing trams below.

Reaching Bispham and Beyond

Keep going past North Pier and you will notice the crowds thinning out. You will walk by Gynn Square which often hosts light displays during the Illuminations season. Rock gardens and grassy embankments give you spots to pause and enjoy the view.

There are benches and small cafes dotted along the way where you can rest or have a drink. Eventually, you will arrive at Bispham which has a more suburban feel. You may see parks, quiet streets and eateries where local families go.

From Bispham, the promenade continues further towards Anchorsholme and then Fleetwood. The full walk from Starr Gate to Bispham usually takes two to three hours depending on your pace. If you want to pause at any point you can hop on the tram since all stops are close by.
